Bookstores, good design, the aisles of Whole Foods, cobblestone streets, dark chocolate, photography, art, roaring fires, smart and curious people, the company of friends and family make me happy. Train rides through Europe, falling asleep to the sound of the rain and road trips through the desert are some of my favorite experiences. All the pleasures of a good life. I know I don't have all the answers, but I like the questions. I love being in New York City for any reason, but especially for a good snowstorm. I'm from the Pacific Northwest, which makes me both down-to-earth and a lover of sunshine. I take good care of myself, body and soul. I was career-driven, now I'm happiness-driven. I've spent much of the last few years traveling in southeast Asia doing volunteer work and I've since founded a non-profit to create educational opportunities in Cambodia. I like the line drawings in dictionaries. I'll let you have the last bite.
My Ideal Person:
A fellow traveler (literally and figuratively), a co-conspirator, a kind, intelligent soul with a good sense of humor and good values.
A man who is off-the-charts bright, witty, intelligent and successful, who will run for the car in the rain and who can abide my secret crush on Jon Stewart.
If you think Johnny Cash, NPR, Lucinda Williams, Coldplay, Tom Waits and Bach make for a good road trip soundtrack while in search of the perfect small town burger shack, we'd probably get along nicely. And if, while devouring said culinary delights, you'd want to share sections of the Sunday NY Times and make me laugh about the finer points of something you're reading, we'd probably get along famously.
If you're a guy who might be spotted at REI; in the surf; doubled over in laughter; aboard a train in Paris; wandering the aisles of a local bookstore; on a compelling career path that you love; volunteering in a faraway jungle to improve a local community's well-being; skiing/hiking in the Rockies; or relishing a quiet read of the NYRB/a good novel/his own thoughts by the fireplace in his own home, then thank you for making the world a more congenial place. If you're a guy who's done all (or even some) of the above in the last year or so, I'm the one who has been looking for you and you should contact me immediately!
The last great book I read What is the What by Dave Eggers; Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert; Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner; A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again by David Foster Wallace; Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan. I love reading: in print, on-line (HuffPo), by mail (New Yorker, NY Review of Books, Outside, Elle Decor), on the doorstep (NY Times), etc.
My most humbling moment Trying to help a group of Cambodian high school girls with their math homework.
Favorite on-screen sex scene The English Patient
The celebrity I resemble the most I get everything from Uma Thurman to Diane Sawyer. Who knew?
The best or worst lie you've ever told: Lying doesn't do anyone much good.
If I could be anywhere right now Italy. Or some place where flip-flops are shoes and hammocks are furniture.
Five items I can't live without The Sunday New York Times, Dark chocolate, Community (family and friends), My passport, The resources to be creative
Fill in the blank: _____ is sexy; _____ is sexier. Words is sexy; good grammar is sexier.
In my bedroom one will find... Hard wood floors. Sheets of significant thread count. Candles. Stacks of books and magazines.
